Program Overview

The BS in Environmental Science provides students with a strong foundation for understanding and addressing contemporary environmental challenges, including climate change and other human impacts. The program develops scientific knowledge, critical thinking, and analytical, practical, technological, and research skills, preparing graduates for careers in environmental assessment, protection, conservation, sustainable solutions, and for postgraduate study.

The program focuses on natural systems, their functions, and their interactions with human societies. Students learn to analyze environmental problems using laboratory, field, geospatial, statistical, and social science methods. Experiential learning is central to the program, through laboratory work, field trips, and a dedicated Field Course involving intensive fieldwork and in-situ research.

Program Goals and Competencies

The interdisciplinary nature of Environmental Sciences degree offers a large number of career opportunities. The graduates of this degree can follow careers as environmental scientists, consultants, educators, and management specialists. More specifically, they may work in: consulting firms and companies performing environmental studies; private companies such as corporations, banks, market research companies, colleges and universities in the areas of environmental planning (e.g. on air quality, land-use, recreation, transportation, water resources, climate change mitigation and adaptation; conservation); environmental performance assessment (e.g. ESG reporting); internal audits; policy and quality assessments; media; nongovernmental organizations in the areas of environmental education and communication (journalism, advertising), and environmental management (water quality management, air quality management, solid and hazardous waste management, land and water conservation, ecosystem and wildlife management); research centers and academic institutions, in environmental research; protected areas as environmental experts, environmental educators or eco-tour guides; and in international posts (e.g. in EU environmental programs) in all of the above areas. 

Environmental Science graduates can follow post-graduate studies in different fields, ranging from ecology and conservation, to environmental toxicology, water quality management, environmental economics and policy. In addition to the gained expertise, the employability skills of students are enhanced through projects within the framework of several courses, including the capstone course, the field course, the internship course and other internship programs. 

Furthermore, the Program strongly supports internships and supervised work experience. Internship opportunities provide practical, work-based learning in environmental organizations and industries, with academic credit awarded based on hours completed and learning outcomes achieved. Students receive guidance from Internship Supervisors and Career Services, including support with placements, CV preparation, interviews, and professional development.

In addition to the specialization acquired, students’ employability skills are strengthened through projects included in many courses, including the capstone course, field research course, internship course, and other internship programs, which bring students in contact with the relevant professional sector and its actors.
