Update on the Fall 2026 Opening of Deree University U.L.E.

Recent decisions of the Council of State have generated questions about the status of non-state universities in Greece. Deree, The American University of Greece U.L.E., holds a valid establishment and operating license, and the legal framework authorizing U.L.E.s remains in force.

Preparations for the opening of Deree University U.L.E. continue. Based on the information currently available, we plan to begin classes on October 19. If regulatory factors require a later opening, we are also prepared to begin classes on November 9.

Regardless of the start date, the academic calendar will give students the opportunity to complete a full first-year course load. We will confirm the academic calendar as the revised review process advances. Prospective students may continue to apply and receive admissions guidance during this period.

The methodology HAHE employed to review U.L.E. programs was grounded in the same quality-assurance framework applied to programs at Greece’s public universities. The Court has required more specific quantitative and qualitative criteria for U.L.E. programs. The revised process will therefore add a distinct layer of review for U.L.E.s, providing students and families with an additional level of quality assurance.

HAHE has begun revising the criteria, the Ministry of Education has confirmed that the legal framework remains in effect, and the program-certification process will continue. These revisions provide a clear basis for completing the program reviews and proceeding with the academic year.
