A Historic New Chapter Begins for Deree, The American University of Greece

The American College of Greece proudly announces that Deree, The American University of Greece was granted an establishment and operating license as a University Legal Entity on July 24, 2026, in accordance with Law 5094/2024. 

This historic decision marks the beginning of a new era for Deree and a significant moment for higher education in Greece. Deree’s internationally oriented American academic model is now formally incorporated into the country’s regulated university framework, creating new opportunities for students to pursue state-recognized university education with a global outlook. 

The license builds on an educational mission that began in 1875 and reflects the values that have shaped Deree across generations: academic excellence, access to opportunity, student-centered learning, and a commitment to preparing graduates to contribute meaningfully to society. 

The American College of Greece submitted its application on February 26, 2026, in collaboration with Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island, USA. Through this partnership, students will be able to study in Greece and earn degrees awarded by an American university under the country’s new framework for non-state higher education.

This new chapter further strengthens our mission to empower young people to thrive within a dynamic, diverse, and internationally oriented learning environment while creating even greater opportunities for Greece’s standing as a global educational destination.”

During its initial phase of operation, Deree University U.L.E. will comprise the School of Business and Economics, the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and the School of Science and Technology. The three Schools have applied to offer 22 undergraduate degree programs and one graduate degree program across business, economics, communication, the social sciences, technology, computing, the arts, and the humanities. 

The programs will combine the breadth and flexibility of American higher education with critical thinking, experiential learning, research, innovation, and strong connections with the professional world. Consistent with its non-profit mission, Deree University U.L.E. will also continue to invest in scholarships and financial assistance, broadening access to high-quality education. 

The establishment of the University ensures full continuity for current Deree students, who will complete their studies under their existing programs without interruption or modification. 

Today, Deree carries forward its educational legacy with renewed purpose, expanding opportunities for students and strengthening Greece’s connection to the international academic community.
